I’ve been out of the loop for a while and am still several weeks of stories behind to the present, but I can say I’ve enjoyed this one more than most other Crane fictions. “Hey lets piss off some Mantis! OK, lets politic some Ponies as well!”
I like how the Crane are directing their political machine with dueling; it’s something I haven’t seen recently. And while doing it the Cranes might be loosening the soil for a nice big hole if their machinations don’t work out. Maybe some Yasuki can get them a nice shiny shovel! Regardless I think this is going to end in a civil war between the Unicorn because Min-Hee’s going to snap unless her champion quickly puts her in her place. [edit: I scanned through Consequences and saw how the wedding will work out, but without finishing the read still think the Champion and Kahn situation will come to a head.]
And who woulda thunk it? A cold, blunt Doji! She uses her fashion as a nuance, but is about as direct as a Hid…Yoritomo. *cough*
I am no courtier,” I said to Seiki later in the halls. “Use the boken from now on. Give me hard blows.”
“That wasn’t hard,” He said, waggling his tetsubo. “This is.”~ Bearers of Jade, Chris Helper and Jennifer Brandes
