I think we should have ten Ikoma Bards. Their only purpose to chant Crab stories of valor and praises of the Empire. If my prime character dies, I’m thinking the 2nd will be this. My chant will be so inspiring, the very taint in an oni will withhold its blessings!

Though “no, you don’t have to”at the same time all it takes is a Bakemono to hop in and take a shit in a rice barrel, and there goes a whole week of food for everyone. Traveling rations are pretty cheap (5 zeni/meal). I’d say having a few days extra is prudent for everyone.
Something that I AM curious about needing to purchase is Jade. For any Crab character I think a finger of jade should be included in their starting gear. Granted the 4th ed start pack doesn’t show this, but this rule is typically era dependent and after a look through the rulebook I couldn’t find the alternate rules.
Also, as this is a Crab funded expedition the Crab would give anyone on it jade (they don’t need the entire army becoming lost mid-rout to the castle). For those who don’t want to spend a koku on jade, can we assume that we are provided with at least a finger? This question is also incredibly important considering:
Shiro Hiruma wrote:Should a character possess jade that would normally put them above ten Jade Ranks, the first point of Shadowlands Taint absorbed by the jade ruins any jade in excess of the cap that they might be carrying in addition to its usual effects.
I'f jade is provided I'd prefer not to waste a whole koku that could be spent on arrows or gear or the Mantis tales of the Birth of Osano-Wo, particularly if it could go to waste (and indeed it might if someone gets bit or something).
Also
A hundred points of jade protection is pretty awesome, so considering the length in shadowlands is 3 weeks ( I believe I read that) simple exposure wont reduce a single finer by a quarter of it’s life if one fails every single taint save (thus I am strongly thinking touch of yumi-do is outweighing touch of Tengoku).
Oni bites, however, are a bitch (book has tn 15). If you have an earth of 2 (I’m guessing any not-crab or lion will), the solid earth roll only has 28% chance of successful save. Earth 3 is 66%. So unless people go as a Crab with Earth 4 this is how our jade is likely going to be used.
By the way, For everyone who needs it, heres a roll and keep probability chart I found online.
