Witch hunters authority

Hi, can someone tell me what exactly is witch hunters authority? Something more than this:
it was the Witch Hunters' duty to keep the Empire pure of all corruption, have the absolute authority to execute maho-tsukai and monitor asylums of the Tainted

A Tsukai-sagasu’s job is essentially to find maho-tsukai and kill them. They are basically specialized magistrates.

I would like to get Rixy’s input on this as well because what a magistrate can do legally depends on several factors including where you are and the status of the individual you are possibly investigating. You don’t just walk up to a general or a family daimyo and start suggesting they are in league with Jigoku. Furthermore, you don’t just go killing off another lord’s peasants without stepping on toes.

This being said they technically only have jurisdiction at the behest of the local lords. In Crab lands, they will be given permission to do pretty much whatever they want, but a Crab magistrate cannot walk into Crane lands and do anything unless it is at the behest of the Crane leadership, or they are working in tandem with the Emerald Magistrate.

Additionally, even having a Tsukai-sagasu in your lands can be construed as an insult to the local leadership. A Witch Hunter isn’t going to be around unless there is maho floating around. If there is maho floating around, the local leadership either isn’t protecting their people properly, or they are possibly condoning it. Although neither of those are necessarily true, the perception is still be there.

Every clan is going to try to deal with any suspected maho internally. If a Witch Hunter is involved, they are probably working with the local law enforcement and the Witch Hunter’s involvement is going to be keep kept as quiet as possible. If a Witch Hunter is doing another project, and they just happen to stumble upon a cultist den and decide to take matters into their own hands; when the dust settles and the local magistrates arrive, that Witch Hunter is going to have some explaining to do.
"Know this, Hitomi-sama. When you rise from earth to heaven, the Crab will be watching you. Do not think that our arrows cannot reach you in the sky. If we must, we will build a wall so high and so thick that even you cannot harm the Empire, and we will shoot at you from atop it until you fall screaming to the ground. Now, go." ~ Kuni Utagu, The Twenty-seven Days of Darkness—Day 14
